Design in and of itself is self fulfilling as it brings to life abstract concepts and ideas. However, design with a historical purpose is exciting as we have the opportunity to tell vibrant stories which are such an important, integral part of world history at large. Stories such as High Flyin’, which explores the history of the first black military aviators whose
achievements, at home and abroad, contributed to the desegregation of the United States military. High Flyin’ promotes and exposes the newest generation to the diverse history of our nation and the world, invoking pride, leadership and patriotism. With every page, children are encouraged to read and participate in learning activities that connect and stimulate their
intellectual and creative abilities. My role in this project was as graphic and games designer responsible for laying out the book in InDesign; conceptualizing, testing and creating games and puzzles utilizing the historical content as well as Troy Jones wonderful illustrations.
